How to Become Architect in India?  Architecture entrance

The Council of Architecture (CoA) is charged with the responsibility to regulate the education and practice of the Architecture profession throughout India besides maintaining the register of architects. NIASA (National Institute of Advanced Studies in Architecture) is the Academic Unit of the CoA.

To do an undergraduate program in Architecture (B. Arch entrance exam) in India, there are 3 exams that one may target:

  1. NATA: To get admission into 400+ architecture colleges in India. This test is conducted by NIASA. Universities include CEPT Ahmedabad, JJ School of Architecture Mumbai, RV College of Architecture Bangalore etc.

  2. IIT JEE (Paper 2): To get admission into 9+ NIT's and other Centrally Funded Universities providing B. Arch programmes. Universities other than NIT's include SPA (Delhi, Bhopal & Vijayawada)

  3. IIT JEE + IIT Advanced + Architecture Aptitude Test: To get admission into 2 IIT's - Kharagpur and Roorkie which provide B. Arch Programmes.

In all cases, students must have Physic, Chemistry and Mathematics as mandatory subjects in their 12th board exams.

How are students ranked to get through B. Arch program in India?
( NATA Entrance Exam )
  1. NATA: 50% of 12th Board score + 50% of NATA Score - Applicants will be given a state rank through which they can secure admissions to colleges in each state considering the reservation categories

  2. IIT JEE (Paper 2): 40% of 12th Board score + 60% of JEE Paper 2 - Ranking is provided by each of the universities independently through which they can secure admissions considering the reservation categories

  3. IIT JEE + IIT Advanced + Architecture Aptitude Test (AAT): Ranking will be given based on students completing JEE-Mains + JEE-Advanced and AAT - Applicants will be given an All India Rank (AIR) through which they can secure admissions to universities considering the reservation categories

Important Tentative  Dates and Deadlines for Nata & JEE, 
  • Test Dates: Nata Test shall be conducted on 19th April 2020 (1st Attempt) Application Deadline 16th Mar  (First attempt), Result on 8th May 

  • 4th May  (2nd Attempt) Application Deadline,  (Second attempt Exam on 31st May . Result on 14th June, Speak to Our our expert counsellors will be able to guide you more in detail.

  • Declaration of Results: The NATA Score Card will be available approximately 4 days after taking the test.

  • Submission of NATA Score Card to CET Cell:The NATA Score Cards must be submitted to the appropriate state CET Cell for Ranking. The submission deadlines vary from state to state.

  • Submission of NATA Score Card to other Counselling groups in each state:The NATA Score Cards must be submitted to the appropriate counselling cells for Ranking. The submission deadlines vary from state to state.

JEE-Paper 2:

  1. Test Dates: Test Dates: Between January 6th, 2020 - January 11th, 2020 for January session and it will be held

  2. Second attempt - To be announced (usually on 1st Sunday of April) second time again in the month of April i.e April 5th, April 7th to April 9th & April 11th. The brochure above has more detailed information

  3. Declaration of Results:  The results will be declared on 31st January  for January session and 30th April for April session.

  4. Declaration of All India Rank:By June.

  5. JEE Main Architecture Examination will basically consist of three sections – Mathematics, General Aptitude, Drawing Skills, while the B.Planning paper will cover Mathematics, General Aptitude and Planning.

IIT JEE + IIT Advanced + Architecture Aptitude Test (AAT):

  1. Test Dates- JEE Mains: Between January 6th,  - January 11th, for January session and it will be held second time again in the month of April i.e April 5th, April 7th to April 9th & April 11th.

  2. Declaration of Results -  The results will be declared on 31st January for January session The top 150,000 ranking candidates will be selected for JEE - Advanced

  3. Registration for JEE Advanced: 4th May  First week of May 

  4. Test Dates - JEE Advanced: 17th May 

  5. Declaration of Results - JEE Advanced: The results will be declared  8th June 2020. 

  6. Registration for AAT: By  June  Not yet officially announce (2nd week of June )

  7. Test Dates - AAT: 12th June

  8. Declaration of Results - Declaration of Results - AAT: 16th June

NATA Target Scores or Ranks:
  • NATA: A target score of 140+ is what students need to focus on to get a good rank in each state. Our students had achieve 152+. Our highest score achieved is 170!

  • IIT JEE (Paper 2): The ranking is conducted by JoSAA. In the past, the seats at SPA Delhi have closed out within the top 400 ranks.

  • IIT JEE + IIT Advanced + Architecture Aptitude Test (AAT): The top 2,00,000 students who qualify JEE Mains, are eligible to answer JEE Advanced. Those who qualify JEE Advanced, are eligible to answer AAT. Students within the top 9000 ranks have secured admissions into the IIT's for Architecture in previous years.

Structure of the Question Papers & Syllabus NATA : B. Arch Entrance exam
  • NATA: 200 marks - 3 hour exam with two parts - Drawing and Aesthetic Sensitivity. Drawing is for 2 hours and has 3 questions (2D, 3D and Theme Sketch). The Aesthetic Sensitivity is a computer Adaptive testing platform which has 40 MCQ's from PCM, Mathematics, English, Architecture Awareness and Mental Ability. Physics:

Electrostatics- Electric charges and Fields; Electrostatic Potential and Clearance, Current Electricity; Magnetic Effects of Current and Magnetism; Moving Charges and magnetism; Magnetism and Matter, Electromagnetic Induction and Alternating currents- Electromagnetic Induction; Alternating Current, Optics- Ray optics and optical instruments, Wave Optics, Dual nature of radiation and Matter, Atoms and Nuclei- Atoms, Nuclei, Electronic devices- Semiconductor Electronics, Materials, Devices and Simple circuits.

Chemistry:

Some Basic Concepts of Chemistry; Structure of Atom; Classification of Elements and Periodicity in Properties, Chemical Bonding and Molecular; States of Matter: Gases and Liquids, Chemical Thermodynamics; Equilibrium; Redox Reactions; Hydrogen; s- Block Elements p -Block Elements, Organic Chemistry: Some basic Principles and Techniques; Hydrocarbons; Environmental Chemistry.

Mathematics:

Algebra, Logarithms, Matrices, Trigonometry, Co-ordinate geometry, 3-Dimensional Co-ordinate geometry, Theory of Calculus: Application of Calculus, Permutation and combination, Statistics and Probability.

General Aptitude:

Objects, texture related to architecture and built environment. Interpretation of pictorial compositions, Visualizing three-dimensional objects from two-dimensional drawing. Visualizing different sides of 3D objects. Analytical reasoning, mental ability (visual, numerical and verbal), General awareness of national/ international architects and famous architectural creations.

Mathematical reasoning:

Statements, logical operations like and, or, if and only if, implies, implied by, Understanding of tautology, converse, contradiction and contrapositive.

Sets and Relations:

Idea of sets, subsets, power set, complement, union, intersection and difference of sets, Venn diagram, De Morgan's Laws, Relation and its properties. Equivalence relation — definition and elementary examples.

Drawing Test:

Understanding of scale and proportion of objects, geometric composition, shape, building forms and elements, aesthetics, colour texture, harmony and contrast. Conceptualization and Visualization through structuring objects in memory. Drawing of patterns - both geometrical and abstract. Form transformations in 2D and 3D like union, subtraction, rotation, surfaces and volumes. Generating plan, elevation and 3D views of objects. Creating 2D and 3D compositions using given shape and forms. Perspective drawing, Sketching of urban scape and landscape, Common day-to-day life objects like furniture, equipment etc., from memory.

IIT JEE (Paper 2) Syllabus:

When we can start for NATA Preparation?
  • To get into NATA, it is crucial that you prepare holistically for the NATA Entrance exam. Since you get only one chance in a year, your preparation cannot be taken lightly.

  • At Sun Design Guru (Sun DG) , we always recommend that you start early. While your 12th Standard board results are not considered for admission into NATA, you still need to do well! Your participation in extra curricular activities like sports, music etc. does help when you do go for your Stage 3 Personal Interview round.
